Roberta Summers launches Fatal Winds, a fact-based story about Downwinders and their fates as victims of nuclear pollution. Readers will follow the life of young genius and theorical physicist, Reese Mayfield, who helps build the Gadget, the world’s first atomic bomb. He goes on to regret his role in creating the world’s most destructive weapon when his first love dies from radioactive exposure. His guilt further deepens when he witnesses the plight of the Downwinders. He goes on to protest atomic bomb testing and nuclear pollution.
A Downwinder herself, Summers wrote the book to heighten awareness of the dangers of nuclear power and weapons. Professor Traci HalesVass, author and founder of One Book/One Community, has this to say, “Fatal Winds is an important book. The story behind the story needs to be learned by all. Summers reveals the tragedies and fates of Downwinders through characters we come to know and love.”
Artifacts Gallery and the Studio Bake Shop in conjunction with the Writers’ Chat group will host a book signing for Summers on Saturday, September 28th from 9:30 a.m. until noon.
