At just 15 years of age, jazz pianist Joey Alexander has already recorded two Grammy-nominated studio albums, My Favorite Things (2015) and Countdown (2016), as well as Joey.Monk.Live! (2017), a critically acclaimed surprise release honoring the Thelonious Monk’s centennial. His third studio effort Eclipse features six of his own tunes as well as jazz classics by John Coltrane and Bill Evans, the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” and more. The album is named for the 10 minute tour-de-force centerpiece of the album, “Eclipse,” inspired by the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, which occurred when he was recording the album. Featuring bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland, and saxophonist Joshua Redman, Eclipse demonstrates Alexander’s aptitude as a composer, bandleader, and musician. Born in 2003 in Bali, Alexander lived in Jakarta from age eight to ten and then moved to New York City in 2014, where he has enjoyed one of the most ascendant careers ever seen in jazz. Jason Olaine, who produced all four of Alexander’s albums, and is a Grammy-winning producer and Director of Programming for Jazz At Lincoln Center, called Alexander a huge talent with a fantastic gift.
