Each year, the New Mexico Jazz Festival features an NEA Jazz Master, and this year, it’s two NEA Jazz Masters–legendary pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland, who have enjoyed an ongoing musical partnership for the past several years, releasing their acclaimed 2014 recording, The Art Of Conversation. Tonight, they expand the duo format with the addition of drummer Nasheet Waits.

Kenny Barron has spent five decades at the forefront of jazz piano aristocracy. Called “one of the foremost exponents of the modern mainstream” (The Independent), he is a multiple-Grammy nominee who was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame in 2005. Named an NEA Jazz Master in 2017, British-born bassist and composer Dave Holland continues to reinvent his concept and approach while honing his instantly identifiable voice. From the Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew-era band to his flamenco inspired collaboration with Spanish guitar legend Pepe Habichuela; from accompanying the great Betty Carter to forging a new sound with the pioneering avant-garde quartet Circle with Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul; from his work with legends like Stan Getz, Hank Jones, Roy Haynes, and Sam Rivers to providing early opportunities to now-leading players such as Chris Potter, Kevin and Robin Eubanks, and Steve Coleman, Holland remains at the forefront of jazz.

Heralded for his musicality and creativity by such virtuosos as Ed Thigpen, Max Roach, Andrew Hill, and Stanley Cowell, drummer Nasheet Waits first came to prominence as a member of Roach's famed percussion ensemble M’BOOM, after which he became a standing member of reedman Antonio Hart’s various ensembles as well as the bands of Andrew Hill, Jason Moran (Bandwagon) and Fred Hersch’s trio. As an originating member of Bandwagon, he, along with bassist Tarus Mateen, was deemed, “the most exciting rhythm section in jazz” by JazzTimes. His own personal musical philosophy embraces a necessity to balance Tradition and Modernism.
