Multi-instrumentalist (woodwinds, keyboards and percussion) and vocalist Horace Alexander Young, a Houston, Texas native, has toured and performed with such artists as Sam Lightnin’ Hopkins, B.B. King, The Manhattans, Joe Sample, The McCoy Tyner Big Band, Aretha Franklin, Abdullah Ibrahim, and many others. Tonight, he pays tribute to the great Nat King Cole in a show he calls Nat King Cole @ 100, a musical celebration of the classic recordings of one of the most elegant and gifted voices in American jazz and popular music. Young has a strong connection with the Cole family legacy, with two of his cousins having played and recorded with NKC and his own performances on the 1989 European Tour of Natalie Cole. Performing a collection of Cole’s most well-known songs, he will be joined by special guest vocalist, Tracey Whitney; John Rangel, piano; Colin Deuble, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums. Trumpeter, vocalist, and composer Paul Gonzales will be joined by Count Basie tenor saxophonist, Doug Lawrence; pianist, Jim Ahrend; bassist, Andy Zadrozny; and drummer James Gonzales (son of Paul) who will make the trip down from Denver for a ‘jazz homecoming’ to perform jazz/hard bop classics, original tunes, and a few vocal numbers. In town to show his new film about the Modern Jazz Quartet on Sunday, July 21, 4pm at Outpost (see page 29), NYC drummer and composer, George Schuller will also perform at Summerfest with his Circle Wide Quintet, together since 2009 and comprising Peter Apfelbaum, saxophone; Brad Shepik, guitar; Tom Beckham, vibes; and Dave Ambrosio, bass. Founded in 1982 by Pancho Romero, the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra (AJO) has been delighting audiences throughout the Southwest for more than thirty years. For many years, under the leadership of trombonist John Sanks, the band performed with an impressive list of guest artists, including renowned trumpeter Bobby Shew, an Albuquerque native, who served as its Musical Director from 2007-2010. Currently under the direction of saxophonist and UNM Professor of Jazz Studies, Glenn Kostur, AJO is joined tonight by Albuquerque’s multi award winning vocalist, Hillary Smith (hONEyhoUSe, Soul Kitchen, etc.). Smith’s deep soulfulness is rooted in the Gospel-driven churches of her youth and her classically trained vocal instrument has been called a natural wonder. Free!
