Monday, March 16, 2020

Monday, San Juan County Commission Chairman Jack Fortner signed an Emergency Declaration, which extends to all local municipalities, and names San Juan County as an Emergency Area due to the national coronavirus outbreak and COVID-19 impacts. At the time of this writing, there are no reported positive cases of COVID-19 in San Juan County.
The declaration of emergency frees up County resources to respond and makes available state and federal resources. To manage operations in this time of emergency, Emergency Manager, Mike Mestas, has activated the Emergency Operations Center and will be acting under authority necessary through the All Hazards Management Act.
San Juan County and the Office of Emergency Management has been coordinating with local agencies for the last weeks in preparation of any response necessary. Local school districts, municipalities, first responders and many others have all been planning for the health of the community.
Communication during this emergency will be released through emailed press releases from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management, Facebook, Twitter, and Nextdoor. Residents should sign up for notifications from Nextdoor, and like and follow other San Juan County Office of Emergency Management social media.

Testing: San Juan Regional Medical Center’s External Assessment Area continues for those with flu/cold-like symptoms including fever, cough, body aches, sore throat, and runny nose. Visitors to this assessment area will be evaluated and treated if necessary, this includes consideration for COVID-19 testing. Their drive-through assessment area is located in one of San Juan Regional Medical Center’s parking lots on West Pinon Street across the street from the hospital and will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 16; Wednesday, March 18; and Friday, March 20.

Prevention:
Just like with many other respiratory illnesses, the best way to protect yourself is to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, to cough or sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue and avoid contact with people who are coughing or sneezing. Also, stay home from work or school when you are sick. Social-distancing is a valuable method of prevention. The limitation of mass gatherings helps to stop or slow down the spread of disease allowing the health care system to more readily care for patients over time. Canceling events that are likely to draw crowds is an example of social distancing. Social distancing is deliberately increasing the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. Staying at least six feet away from other people lessens your chances of catching COVID-19.

Schools:
Following orders from the New Mexico Public Education Department, all schools will be closed for three weeks, including spring break. This closure includes all school activities, meetings and athletic practices. Games have been canceled until April 6, 2020. Currently, schools are planning to resume classroom instruction on April 6, 2020.
School districts are planning for the distribution of breakfast and lunch at locations across the county. Check with your child’s school for information on locations and times. Information is listed here: https://www.newmexico.gov/education/meal-sites-for-children/.

San Juan College:
San Juan College plans to move courses online for two weeks following Spring Break. The college has also chosen to cancel events through Friday, April 17. San Juan College will be closed to students and visitors March 15 – April 5, and currently plans to reopen April 6. This includes the main campus, the Health and Human Performance Center, as well as San Juan College East, San Juan College West, 30th Street Education Center and Hutton Street Complex.
Students may contact their instructors and check their San Juan College emails for information regarding the closure, their class structure, tutoring, and other support services.
