Police Investigate Man's Death

Officers responded to the area of the bridge near the 800 block of Broadway Blvd for reports of a man in the water around 7:15 a.m. Officers found Carlos Atencio, 22, deceased underneath the bridge.

Wednesday, October 2, 2019:

Farmington detectives are investigating the details surrounding the death of Carlos Atencio, 22 of Farmington, whose body was recovered from the Animas River yesterday.  Officers responded to the area of the bridge near the 800 block of Broadway Blvd for reports of a man in the water around 7:15 a.m. Officers found Atencio deceased underneath the bridge. This incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the detective tip line at 505-599-1068, or San Juan County Crime Stoppers at 505-334-TIPS. Further details will be released as they become available.

     The initial investigation indicated a 2019 Dodge pickup was traveling east on US64.  For reasons unknown a pedestrian, Delbert Atcitty Jr. (38) of Shiprock, NM was struck while walking in the right lane of the roadway by the Dodge.  Atcitty sustained fatal injuries in the crash, and he was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

    Patrol officers secured the area and called for the SWAT team to respond. Negotiators’ attempts to contact Joseph Rino weren’t successful. Officers obtained a search warrant for the house,  then The SWAT team and K9s entered the house and arrested Rino without incident.

  • Traffic Light Installed on Crouch Mesa

    The stoplights were installed on traffic signal arms which previously flashed yellow lights for north/south traffic and flashed red lights for east-west traffic. The installation of the traffic signal comes after a traffic study showed that the vehicle volume through the intersection met warrants as set by the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The eight-hour Vehicular Volume count is the controlling warrant for traffic signal control at the intersection. Road 350 is one of the most heavily-traveled San Juan County maintained roadways.   • Teen Arrested after Another Teen Dies from Gunshot Wound

    Shortly before 1 p.m. on the 14th, Farmington Police Department responded to a residence on the east side of Farmington with medics to a report of a male juvenile who was unresponsive. Upon arrival, the teen was found to be deceased. Farmington detectives began investigating the scene and found that the juvenile had sustained a gunshot wound, causing his death. Further investigation of the incident ultimately led to Montano’s arrest
