“A revolutionary drummer as well as a visionary composer and bandleader” (Drumhead Magazine), Cuban-born Dafnis Prieto moved to New York City in 1999 and became a first-call collaborator for the city’s most exacting and creative musicians (Eddie Palmieri, Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman, Chico and Arturo O’Farrill, Michel Camilo, and many more). Now based in Miami, he remains a vital force on the scene, forging networks of cross-cultural musical alliances, creating an extensive repertoire of compositions, and receiving an impressive list of commissions. The Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio’s premiere performance took place in 2009 at the Whitney Museum in New York, and has since deepened its rapport, playing in front of live audiences around the world. Combining the freestyle poetry, rapping, and vocal percussion of Kokayi (with whom Prieto formed a duo in 2004) with Prieto’s explosive drumming, and the rhythmically charged electronic keyboards of Jason Lindner (the band’s original keyboardist), the Proverb Trio’s eponymously titled 2012 debut album on Prieto’s Dafnison Music label, received high praise. A 2011 MacArthur Fellow, Prieto explains, “we are creating songs, not sprawling jams, but concise structures and infectious grooves created collectively, on the fly, around poetry that is as improvised as the instrumental parts.” The original Proverb Trio took a hiatus from touring from 2015-18, during which Prieto focused on other projects, including his new Big Band which won a 2019 Grammy for its debut recording Back to the Sunset. Performing again for the first time since 2014, the trio currently features Egyptian-born keyboardist Oz Ezzeldin, who alternates the role with Jason Lindner. Down Beat Magazine exclaimed, “Dafnis Prieto’s globally inspired trio date is a cultural prophecy, an oracle that presents a broad, awe-inspiring vision of the jazz future,” and All About Jazz called their album “A modern-day masterpiece!” $30/$25 Members & Students (no Member Passes)
