Where are the Totally Ninja Raccoons? They will be hiding in several Farmington area businesses during July.
For many years, Candlewick Press presented a search for Where’s Waldo, the publisher’s iconic cartoon character. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Candlewick canceled the 2020 hunt. In response, From My Shelf, a Welsbro, PA bookstore owned by author Kevin Coolidge, decided to host the “Where Are the Totally Ninja Raccoons” search based on Coolidge’s “Totally Ninja Raccoon” action series of books for 7 to 10-year-old reluctant readers. The series is about the three raccoon brothers who become ninjas, and is available at Amy’s Bookcase.
This year, Coolidge and From My Shelf agreed to allow other Independent Bookstores around the nation to host the Where are the Totally Ninja Raccoons. Amy Henkenius, owner of Amy’s Bookcase in Farmington, in an effort to get locals and visitors alike back into locally owned small businesses, took on the task of setting up a Raccoon event. “After a year of uncertainty, we thought it would be nice to have a little fun in our community,” said Henkenius.
Each participating business will have free passports, listing all of the businesses where searchers can find the Ninja Raccoons. When a customer spots the hidden raccoons, the business will stamp or sign the passport.
The hunt for the raccoon brothers begins on Thursday, July 1 at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. This event gives both locals and tourists of all ages an opportunity to play.
All passports must be turned in at Amy’s Bookcase no later than 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 for prize eligibility.
For each place a person finds the Ninja Raccoons and gets their passport signed or stamped, their name goes on a ticket in the prize jar. The drawing for prizes will be Saturday, July 31, at 4:30, and winners will be announced on Facebook.
Prizes include gift certificates to and items donated by participating businesses.
The Ninja Raccoons will be hiding in/at these Farmington businesses: Dad’s Diner, Buell’s Fish Hooks, What the Junk?, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Amy’s Bookcase, Farmington Visitors Center at Gateway Museum, Kopy-Rite Printing, Tales of Tomorrow, Second Hand Wolf, Calvares Santos y Mas, San Juan College Health and Human Performance Center’s Rental Center, Oso Grande Coffee Company, Artifacts Gallery, Foutz and Hanon Car and Truck Accessories, Ice Age Frozen Yogurt, Sycamore Park Community Center, Coffee, San Juan Nurseries and 505 Cycles.
