Today, State Senator Steve Lanier officially announced his candidacy for Governor of New Mexico.
Lanier, a lifelong resident of Aztec, New Mexico, brings decades of leadership, integrity, and dedication to his home state. Born and raised on a small farm near Cedar Hill, Lanier's hard work, teamwork, and community service were instilled early through his years as a student-athlete at Aztec High School.
After earning his degree from Western New Mexico University, Lanier spent 28 years as an educator and coach at Aztec High School, where he taught history and computer science and coached football, track, and cross-country. His career in education established a lifelong dedication to helping others succeed.
In 2020, Lanier was elected to the San Juan County Commission, and in 2024, he again earned the trust of his neighbors as State Senator for New Mexico's 2nd District. His leadership has been defined by a deep respect for the people he serves and a passion for creating opportunities for all New Mexicans.
"As someone who has spent my life serving this community - in the classroom, on the field, and now in the legislature - I know what makes New Mexico special," said Lanier. "Our state deserves leadership that listens, works hard, and puts people first. My campaign is about standing up for New Mexicans and building a brighter future together. Our state. Our future."
Lanier's campaign aims to rebuild trust in government, support rural communities, enhance education, and develop safe, prosperous neighborhoods throughout New Mexico.
Outside of public service, Lanier enjoys spending time at Navajo Lake with his family, a tradition passed down through generations. His wife, Sandra, a small business owner and fellow public servant, shares his passion for community and progress,
