NM Rep. Joseph Hernandez Ends Re-Election Campaign

In his statement, Hernandez says, "At this time, I believe the best decision for me and those I love is to focus on my health and my family, while continuing to serve the community that entrusted me with this office through the remainder of my term."

Representative Joseph Franklin Hernandez (D NM-4) issued a statement earlier today saying he has withdrawn his candidacy from the upcoming November election.  The move comes just three days after reports surfaced with additional details about the police incident involving the lawmaker at his hotel in Chicago in the early morning hours of July 29, 2026.

In his statement, Hernandez says, "At this time, I believe the best decision for me and those I love is to focus on my health and my family, while continuing to serve the community that entrusted me with this office through the remainder of my term."

Hernandez was running against Republican Heather Scott Ellison in November before ending his campaign.  It appears San Juan County Democrats had attempted to select former Representative Anthony Allison to run again, but he is listed as disqualified on the New Mexico Secretary of State's website for the 2026 November election.  Ellison will appear unopposed on the ballot.
