Archaeology Southwest "El Malpais Kipuka Survey" : With Paul Reed, & Scott Michlin

The Scott Michlin Morning Program

Thursday, June 4, 2026 - 32 minutes

Paul Reed of Archaeology Southwest discusses recent archaeological research at El Malpais National Monument, a rugged volcanic landscape near Grants, New Mexico. The study focused on isolated landforms called Kipukas—areas of untouched ground surrounded by ancient lava flows—where researchers discovered evidence of Puebloan habitation, trails, and cultural activity dating back more than 1,000 years.

The findings suggest that Indigenous communities established permanent settlements and developed sophisticated ways to travel, farm, and manage water resources in what appears today to be a harsh environment. Reed also highlights the importance of collaboration with modern Pueblo communities to better understand and preserve the region's cultural heritage.
