Dootl'izhi Turquoise in the Matriachland

The San Juan County Historical Society presents a talk and exhibit on the importance of Turquoise among the Navajo and Pueblo people of the southwest. The event takes place at 6PM on Wednesday, October 22nd at the Farmington Civic Center.

This presentation will take you on a journey from the ancient Egyptian royalty to the cultures of the Aztec empire and to the doorstep of the Navajo matriarchs who wear it perpetually.

Have you ever wondered why turquoise has a predominance in the land of the southwest? Ever wonder why the turquoise mineral is so revered among the Navajo and Pueblo people of the southwest?  Turquoise has many layers of identity among the southwest tribal groups that include both tangible and intangible symbolic meanings and therefore will also be a mainstay of culture.  Beyond the adornment of the person with turquoise, it carries spiritual connections to the individual.  This presentation will take you on a journey from the ancient Egyptian royalty to the cultures of the Aztec empire and to the doorstep of the Navajo matriarchs who wear it perpetually.
