Arizona Public Service (APS) has announced it's decision to extend the operation of the Four Corners Power Plant (FCPP) beyond 2031. Navajo Transitional Energy Company's Navajo Mine provides the necessary coal for the operation of the plant and is positioned to meet the needs of FCPP well into the future.

Navajo Transitional Energy Company, LLC (NTEC) welcomed the decision by Arizona Public Service to extend the operation of the Four Corners Power Plant (FCPP) beyond 2031. NTEC's Navajo Mine provides the necessary coal for the operation of the plant and is positioned to meet the needs of FCPP well into the future.
"We welcome this step by APS," said Tim McLaughlin, NTEC Board Chairman. "It helps extend the FCPP, in turn bringing more reliability to the electric grid in our region. Moreover, the decision will help continue NTEC's strategy to provide the Navajo Nation with economic sovereignty, including jobs and vital revenue to the Navajo Nation and its people."
NTEC is one of the most significant economic contributors to the Navajo Nation, generating more than $128 million in annual economic impact and employing more than 350 individuals at the Navajo Mine, the vast majority of whom Navajo Nation members and other Native American tribal members. Annual taxes and royalties paid by the Navajo Mine and the FCPP account for approximately 35 percent of the Navajo Nation General Fund. In 2025, NTEC also contributed more than $1.7 million to Navajo Nation communities.
As the third-largest coal producer in the United States, NTEC contributes annually to the Navajo Nation through direct dividend payments, royalties, taxes, and charitable giving. Furthermore, NTEC remains a vital economic anchor for the region and beyond, securing hundreds of high-paying jobs, prioritizing Navajo employment, and providing robust workforce training that sustains families and strengthens regional economies.
