Update Utah Man Accused of Shooting at Law Enforcement Arrested

Vijil has been charged with Assault on a Federal Officer and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence. On May 3, 2020 at approximately 7pm, a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer arrested Cecil Vijil. Vijil was walking along Highway 160, south of Towaoc, Colorado, which is located south of Cortez, on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation. He was arrested without incident.

On May 3, 2020 at approximately 7pm, a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer arrested Cecil Vijil. Vijil was walking along Highway 160, south of Towaoc, Colorado, which is located south of Cortez, on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation. He was arrested without incident.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for the arrest and conviction of Cecil Vijil, Jr., who is wanted in connection with an assault on a federal officer and could be in the Four Corners area.

The San Juan County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office is offering a $1,000 reward.

On April 30, 2020, an FBI special agent and a San Juan County Sheriff’s deputy went to Vijil’s home near Aneth, Utah, on the Navajo Nation, as part of an investigation into another crime.

That’s when Vijil allegedly fired multiple rounds at the special agent and deputy.

No one was injured.

Vijil has been charged with Assault on a Federal Officer and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Vijil is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911, their local law enforcement agency, or the FBI at (801) 579-1400.

The San Juan County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office, the Navajo Police Department, and the Utah Department of Public Safety are assisting in the investigation.

Kirtland Students on Remote Learning thru Thursday

The district has worked with the Lower Valley Water Users Association on the testing needed to lift the boil water notice. Because of the number of tests required, the district has decided to keep students on remote learning as a precaution for their well-being. If test results come back early, the district must still follow processes and protocols to flush and clear the water lines at each school before in-person instruction can resume. Safety is our top priority for the well-being of our Kirtland students.

Water Samples taken from the Lower Valley Water Association system have tested negative for e-coli. The Boil Water notice has been lifted for customers.
Woman's Husband Arrested for Kirtland Killing

Through the course of the investigation, detectives discovered that Lauren Patterson’s husband, Jess Patterson, had previously resided in California and had been arrested at least 6 times for domestic violence in that state and had been arrested in July 2026 in New Mexico for battering Ms. Patterson. An autopsy revealed Ms. Patterson suffered multiple broken bones, bruising, and internal injuries.
