The preliminary investigation indicates that Michael Murray, 74, approached his ex-wife, Wanda Murray, 66, of Durango, as she was leaving her place of work. Mr. Murray entered Ms. Murray’s vehicle on the passenger side. She immediately exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Mr. Murray followed her a short distance. When Ms. Murray turned to look back, Mr. Murray produced a handgun and fired one shot, striking her and causing her to fall to the ground. Bystanders immediately called 911, prompting an emergency response from the Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff's Office, and Durango Fire & Rescue. First Responders arrived within minutes and began life-saving measures on both individuals. Both were transported to Mercy Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

At this time, this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
