The Farmington Police Department is providing additional information and releasing video footage related to the officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 10, 2026, in the 1100 block of Hines Road.

On March 10 at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers responded to a domestic violence call after a family member reported receiving a text message from the victim stating that Leon Quintana (27) was pointing a gun at her. The victim requested that police be contacted, but asked that officers approach quietly to avoid escalating the situation.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male and female walking who matched the provided descriptions. Officers gave commands for Mr. Quintana to place his hands on his head and walk backward toward them.

During the encounter, Mr. Quintana hesitated and shifted his movements while officers continued giving commands. He then produced a firearm and fired a shot toward officers, striking an officer’s patrol car. A second shot was also fired.

Three Farmington police officers discharged their firearms at least one time each. Mr. Quintana was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers immediately rendered aid following the shooting. No officers or other individuals were physically injured during the incident.

Domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous situations officers encounter, often involving rapidly evolving and unpredictable circumstances.

This incident remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Farmington Police Department recognizes the seriousness of this incident and its impact on all involved. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Quintana.
